Alcohol abuse, a huge problem in our society, is often confused with alcoholism. Alcoholism is a disease that is characterized by excessive alcoholic consumption at a level that interferes with one’s mental well being, physical health, and social responsibilities. Alcohol abuse differs from alcoholism because it doesn’t necessarily include strong cravings for alcohol or physical dependency.

Alcoholism and alcohol abuse may not be the same, but they are similar in that they both can be very serious and detrimental to one’s life. Alcohol abuse, like alcoholism, can be characterized by certain tell-tale behavior. One sign is a failure to fulfill work, school, or home responsibilities. Due to the almost impossible task of maintaining serenity in life while abusing alcohol, one’s normal responsibilities easily are affected.

Another sign of alcohol abuse would be having recurring alcohol-related legal problems like DUIs or being arrested for physically assaulting people while drunk. It is very common for those who abuse alcohol to not be aware of their limits and, hence, find themselves in trouble with the authorities.

There are definite similarities and distinctions between alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Both can be detrimental to one’s life, lifestyle, and social relationships, but thanks to the advances in treatment methods, there is help.
